How Islam Got Started!
Definition of Islam: Surrender
The Birth of Muhammad: 570 A.D
- Quraysh Tribe: Idol worshippers, Hubal, Allat, Al-Uza, Manat
- Bani Hashem clan
- House of Abdul-mottalib
His mother, Amaneh died in 576 A.D
His grandfather Abdulmotalleb died in 578 A.D
His uncle Abu-talib who was a merchant, raised him and took him on his trading journeys.
Muhammad was known as Al-amin (Honest). He married a business woman called Khadijeh in 595 A.D.
Muhammad received his first Revelation by Gabriel in Hara cave in 610 A.D. Gabriel gave him the words of Allah to read.
Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists), 2. Has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood).n3. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, 4. Who has taught (the writing) by the pen [the first person to write was Prophet Idrees (Enoch)], 5. Has taught man that which he knew not. Q 96:1-5
Early Muslim tradition records that, when Muhammed was about to receive a revelation from Allah, he would often fall on the ground, his body would jerk uncontrollably, his eyes would roll backward, and he would perspire profusely. After the trance, he would rise and tell the message given to him. Gabriel told him to read the above verse, but Muhammad replied that he was illiterate. Gabriel therefore squeezed him, and he fell on the ground, and his body was shaken because of a great fear he experienced. This happened three times, and finally Muhammad read the words of Allah.
When we read about the angel Gabriel in the Bible, we always find him bringing comfort to people. Gabriel’s first word to the many Old Testament prophets was “Fear not”.
- Daniel: Daniel 10:12,19,
- Women at the tomb of Jesus:Matthew 28:5,10,
- Zacharias: Luke 1:13,
- Mary the mother of Jesus: Luke 1:30
- Shepherds: Luke 2:10
- John the apostle of Jesus: Revelation 1:17
Muhammad kept the revelation secret for three years, except from his wife Khadijeh, who thought that Muhammad was called by God to be a prophet. After three years, Muhammad started preaching to his own tribe, Quraysh, but was rejected of them. Upon rejection and persecution, Muhammad and his few followers went to Abyssinia (Ethiopia), kingdom of Axam in 615 A.D. He started his teachings based on five pillars, which are five fundamentals.
Fundamentals of Islam:
- Shahada– The Profession of faith
- Salat– Daily prayers
- Zakat– Alms and Giving
- Sawm– Fasting during Ramadan
- Hajj– Pilgrimage to Mecca
Beliefs:
- Allah– The Monotheistic God
- Muhammad – the final messenger of Allah
- Creation– By Allah in 6/8 days.
- Human– The best of all creatures with free will to worship Allah
- Angels– Made of fire
- Satan– Cast out of heaven for disobeying Allah to bow down to man
- Judgment day– Judging people according to good works.
- Return of Mahdi with Messiah. Mahdi would be the savior of all mankind when returning.
In 619 A.D, both Muhammad’s wife Khadijeh and his uncle, Abu-Talib died.
In 620 A.D., Muhammad had a night journey to Jerusalem where he prayed, and from there he ascended up to heaven riding on Al-Buraq, a heavenly horse. He conversed with the prophets of old in heaven.
Was Muhammad really a prophet? The Bible gives us a sign for being a prophet or an apostle.“Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.2 Cor 12:12
Qualification of Muhammad as a prophet: according to the Quran, Muhammad had no signs or wonders. ‘The unbelievers ask: “Why has no sign been given him by his Lord?”(7:203; 2:118)
“But you are only to give warning”’.(Q13:7,31; 6:37,109). ‘Say, “This book is a veritable proof from your Lord”. Q 7:203
“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?” Matthew 7:15-16
Three common things about a cult:
1- Power. The founders of false religions usually seek to gain power and honor. Jesus was offered power and a kingdom by Satan, but He rejected it.
“Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.” John 18:36
Muhammad sought to gain power using his sword through wars:
- 622 A.D. Migration to Medina and ruling over it
- 624 A.D. Battle of Badr- 300 vs 900 Muslim’s victory
- 625 A.D. Battle of Uhud- 750 vs 3300 Quraysh victory
- 627 A.D. Battle of Trench- 3000 vs 10000 Muslim victory
- 628 A.D. Treaty of Hudaybiyyah
- 630 A.D. March on Mecca – 10000 Muslims
- 632 A.D. Farewell pilgrimage and death
When Jesus’ disciples saw the Samaritans rejecting Jesus, they asked Him if they could command fire from heaven as Elijah did in the Old Testament, but Jesus rebuked them for enforcing violence.
“And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem. And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village”. Luke 9:52-56
- Possession
a) Muhammad and wealth
Allah’s Apostle said: “I have been ordered (by Allah) to fight against the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah’s Apostle, and offer the prayers perfectly and give the obligatory charity, so if they perform that, then they save their lives and property from me except for Islamic laws and then their reckoning (accounts) will be done by Allah.” (Bukhari)
b) Muhammad’s Successors and wealth
When Allah’s Messenger died and Abu Bakr was elected as a Caliph after him, some of the Arabs reverted to disbelief, ‘Umar said to Abu Bakr, “How dare you fight the people while Allah’s Messenger said, ‘I have been ordered to fight the people till they say, “None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.” And whoever says: “None has the right to be worshipped but Allah” saves his wealth and his life from me unless he deserves a legal punishment justly, and his account will be with Allah!”’” Abu Bakr said, “By Allah, I will fight him who discriminates between Zakat and Salat (prayers), for Zakat is the compulsory right to be taken from the wealth. By Allah, if they refuse to give me even a tying rope which they use to give to Allah’s Messenger, I would fight them for withholding it.” ‘Umar said, “By Allah, It was nothing, except I saw that Allah had opened the chest of Abu Bakr to the fight, and I came to know for certain that that (i.e. the decision to fight) was the truth.”(Bukhari)
Fight against such of those who have been given the Scripture as believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, and forbid not that which Allah hath forbidden by His messenger, and follow not the Religion of Truth, until they pay the tribute [jizya] readily, being brought low.(Pickthall)
This verse that commands battle against Christians and Jews (“Scripture” is the Bible) is all about theology and belief. It says nothing explicit about a real and physical harm done to Islam. Muhammad launched his Tabuk Crusade in late AD 630 against the Byzantine Christians. He had heard a rumor that a huge army was mobilizing to invade Arabia, but the rumor was false, so his 30,000 jihadists returned home, but not before imposing a jizya tax on northern tribes of Christians and Jews. They had three options: (1) fight and die; (2) convert; (3) or submit and pay the second-class-citizen jizya tax for the “privilege” of living under Islam.
c) Jesus and Wealth
And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Luke 4:5-8
- Pleasure
a) Mohammad and his Marriage
And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hand possesses. That is more suitable that you may not incline (to injustice).Q 4:3
“The Prophet used to go round (have sexual relations with) all his wives in one night, and he had nine wives”.Sahih Al-Bukhari 5068
“It was narrated that ‘Aishah said: “The Messenger of Allah did not die until Allah permitted him to marry whatever women he wanted.”Sunan AL-nasai 3207
“It was narrated that ‘Aishah said: “The Messenger of Allah married me when I was six, and consummated the marriage with me when I was nine, and I used to play with dolls.”Al-Nasai – Hadith 3380
“When I got married, Allah’s Apostle said to me, “What type of lady have you married?” I replied, “I have married a matron.’ He said, “Why, don’t you have a liking for the virgins and for fondling them?” Jabir also said: Allah’s Apostle said, “Why didn’t you marry a young girl so that you might play with her and she with you?”Al-Bukhari – Hadith 5080
Anas bin Malik said, “The Prophet used to visit all his wives in a round, during the day and night and they were eleven in number.” I asked Anas, “Had the Prophet the strength for it?” Anas replied, “We used to say that the Prophet was given the strength of thirty (men).” And Sa’id said on the authority of Qatada that Anas had told him about nine wives only (not eleven).”Al-Bukhari Hadith 268
Allah’s Apostle said, “Many amongst men reached (the level of) perfection but none amongst the women reached this level except Asia, Pharaoh’s wife, and Mary, the daughter of ‘Imran. And no doubt, the superiority of ‘Aisha to other women is like the superiority of Tharid (i.e. a meat and bread dish) to other meals.” Al-Bukhari – Hadith 623
Muhammad and his Successors
After the death of Muhammad, Muslims sought to find a Caliphate (a Successor) to lead Muslims. There were two candidates to be the caliphate.
- Ali(cousin and the son-in-law of Muhammad): Founder of Shia
- Abu-Bakr(Friend of Muhammad): Founder of Sunni
Ali, who lead Shiites, and Abu Bakr, who led the Sunnis, followed the steps of Muhammad to gain power through war. They spread Islam by attacking countries, and by forcing people to either surrender to Islam or die.
From 632 A.D. (when Muhammad died) till 742 A.D., Muhammad’s followers started 116 wars, killing millions of people and taking women as slaves.
BATTLES STARTED BY MUSLIMS:
