Step 5: God the Son in the Old Testament
Jesus didn’t just exist when He was born of Mary in Bethlehem, but He existed even before the world was created and before He was born in Bethlehem. We read in the Old Testament that He appeared to many prophets and He is prophesied so many times in the Old Testament. We will examine the Bible to read the prophecies about Jesus’ birthplace and how so many of Old Testament prophets foretold about Him.
1) Exodus 20:1-3
First, We need to know who the God of the Bible is
“And God spake all these words, saying, I am the LORD (Jehovah) thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”
2) Exodus 6:1-3
Then the LORD said unto Moses, Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh: for with a strong hand shallhe let them go, and with a strong hand shall he drive them out of his land. 2 And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the LORD: 3 And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.
3) Proverbs 30:4
“Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?”
Notice Solomon in 950 B.C. believed that God has a Son
4) Psalm 2:12
“Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.”
in about 1000 B.C. David believed that God has a Son and he prophesied about the Second Coming of the Son of God. At the Second advent, we need to kiss the Son to welcome and receive Him. if we reject Him, we will be judged by Him. We need to get ready for His Coming by receiving Him as the Son of God and as our Savior.
5) Daniel 3:24,25
Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. 25 He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.
in about 500 B.C, Daniel believed that God has a Son who saved three Jews in the fire.
6) Isaiah 9:6
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
About 700 B.C. Isaiah believed that God has a Son who gave Him for us to die on the cross to save us from our sins.
7) Micah 5:2
But thou, Beth-lehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
In the verse above
- Who is “he”? who is “me”? “He” is God the Father and “me” is God the Son
- What does “goings forth” mean? He comes out of Godhead and goes forth out of heaved to interacts with the physical universe.
- Who is “going forth”? God the Son
- How long has He been ‘going forth’ for? From of old from everlasting
- What does this mean? God the Son (Jesus) is an everlasting God who always existed.
8) Exodus 3:1-14
Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. 2 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. 3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. 4 And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.
5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.
6 Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God. 7 And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;
8 And Iam come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.
13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? 14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
“I AM means: I shall be (forever) the same as I am today, unchangeable, eternal.
When Moses asked God what His name was. God revealed His name for the first time to Moses as I AM which is YHWH in the Hebrew.
9) John 8:58,59
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. 59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
After 1500 years from the time of Moses who received the name of God as I AM, Jesus said to the Jews that His name is I AM claiming to be the God who appeared to Moses in the burning bush.
10) John 8:24
I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
Jesus said that if we don’t believe that He is the I AM ( meaning God) we will die in our sins and will go to hell.
11) Isaiah 48:12-16
Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last. Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together. 14 All ye, assemble yourselves, and hear; which among them hath declared these things? The LORD hath loved him: he will do his pleasure on Babylon, and his arm shall be on the Chaldeans.
15 I, even I, have spoken; yea, I have called him: I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous.
16 Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord GOD, and his Spirit, hath sent me.
in verse 16 we see the trinity has been clearly revealed even in 700 B.C by Isaiah the prophet.
